Carabao Cup fourth round draw: Spurs v Man City, Brighton v Liverpool – as it happened

Key events

Tottenham draw Manchester City in fourth round

Manchester City will travel to Tottenham in the fourth round of the Carabao Cup.

Holders Liverpool have been drawn to play away at Brighton, while Manchester United are at home against Leicester.

Championship outfit Preston’s reward for seeing off top-flight Fulham in an epic penalty shoot-out last week is a home game with Arsenal.

Fellow second-tier sides Sheffield Wednesday and Stoke go to Brentford and Southampton respectively.

There is another all-Premier League tie as Aston Villa host Crystal Palace, and a potential one if Newcastle get past League Two AFC Wimbledon, with the winners of that game to face Chelsea at home.

The AFC Wimbledon-Newcastle contest was due to be played at the Cherry Red Records Stadium on Tuesday night but was switched to St James’ Park next Tuesday after the former was affected by flooding.

The fourth-round games are scheduled to take place in the week commencing 28 October. PA Media

Diogo Jota and Curtis Jones speak after Liverpool’s 5-1 win.

Jota:

It was not an easy game. Maybe not. Game was completely different. They made it hard for us. They kept the ball. It was important to get the equaliser. And to score at Anfield is always special. We are still developing our ideas [under the new manager, Arne Slot] but by winning we can only improve.

Jones:

It has been hard. I had an injury. But I am happy to be back. We have got a big team but we can change the whole team and play well.

Up next, is the League Cup draw for the next round. While we wait for that, though here is my favourite goal from today’s Europa League matches.

Full-times in the Europa League

  • Dynamo Kyiv 0-3 Lazio

  • Midtjylland 1-1 Hoffenheim

  • Galatasaray 3-1 PAOK

  • Ludogorets 0-2 Slavia Praha

  • Nice 1-1 Real Sociedad

  • Anderlecht 2-1 Ferencvaros

  • Manchester United 1-1 Twente

Full-time! Liverpool 5-1 West Ham

West Ham had flashes of brilliance but ultimately Lopetegui will have plenty of questions to answer. Lack of cohesive plan, too slow and not clinical enough. Liverpool started slow and kept their heads up after conceding. Jota, their most clinical striker at the moment, scored two before Salah added a third from off the bench and Gakpo capped it off with two late goals.

GOAL! Liverpool 5-1 West Ham (Gakpo 90+3)

This is so painful for West Ham. You would think a clash between two Premier League sides in the League Cup would be more competitive. Gakpo uses his body as a shield to keep hold of the ball, and similar to his earlier goal comes inside, but this time hits one at the far post. A deflection means that Fabianski can’t react in time to make the save.

GOAL! Liverpool 4-1 West Ham (Gakpo 90)

Great combination between Tsimikas and Gakpo and the Dutch breaks through on the left and beats Fabianski at the near post. He’s worked hard tonight, as he has all season, and certainly deserved a goal to cap off the performance.

RED CARDS! Dynamo Kyiv 0-3 Lazio

Earlier, Bragaru got a straight red for an ankle stamp and Noslin has now been sent off for an off-the-ball foul after a flying elbow in the box.

Full-time! Arsenal 5-1 Bolton

Arteta’s side breeze into the next round with five goals from four different players. A great night for the north London side, having been able to rest some of their key players and bed in some debutants.

RED CARD! Liverpool 3-1 West Ham (Álvarez 76)

Silly mistake here from Álvarez. Salah is near the touchline, well away from the goal and Álvarez has Cresswell alongside him, but he still opts to slide into the Liverpool winger’s ankle. He gets his second yellow and then is dismissed. He’s killed the slim chance his team had.

GOAL! Liverpool 3-1 West Ham (Salah 74)

About 15 minutes ago, Jota was substituted off – a huge relief for West Ham players. Until they turn to see Salah coming on to replace him. Um, no thanks. The Egyptian plays the ball to Bradley, who finds Mac Allister. The keeper saves the initial shot but Salah fires the rebound right into the roof of the net.

GOAL! Anderlecht 2-0 Ferencvaros (Dolberg 66 pen)

An obvious penalty after a trip in the box and Dolberg (that’s a name you have not heard in a while) makes no mistake as he hits it low and hard.

Liverpool 2-1 West Ham: It is all kicking off at Anfield! Lopetegui gets booked after he mouths at the referee. He wants a penalty but Liverpool’s Tsimikas is adamant the ball hit in the stomach. And it seems the referee agrees with him. His arms were up though, if that matters.

GOAL! Anderlecht 1-0 Ferencvaros (Verschaeren 60)

Every game in Europe now officially has a goal! Fantastic low first time finish from Verschaeren gives the Belgian side the lead.

GOAL! Arsenal 5-1 Bolton (Havertz 78)

Jesus slips on the right side but he manages to get the ball to Sterling. The former Chelsea man surges forward and takes a shot which is saved but the ball finds Havertz and he scores a looping goal. We are close to a silly scoreline now in north London.

PENALTY SAVE! Nice 1-1 Real Sociedad

The referee gives Nice a penalty after he deems that a pull on Guessand in the box from a corner was a foul. Guessand steps up and the captain stutters forward and his shot to Remiro’s right is weak at best and the keeper keeps it out. Still all tied in Nice!

GOAL! Galatasaray 1-0 PAOK (Baba Rahman 48 og)

Um … I do not know how to dress this up so I will just say that is one of the worst goals to concede … From a corner, Osimhen heads the ball to the far post. Baba Rahman is there and he just … kicks the ball into his own net. I guess there was just too much power on it and the PAOK player was unable to control it but still, very comical.

GOAL! Arsenal 4-1 Bolton (Sterling 64)

Saka seemingly gets the better of the entire Bolton team and their bench on the right hand side before a straight cross in. It is deflected to Sterling, who opens his Arsenal account with an easy finish.

GOAL! Liverpool 2-1 West Ham (Jota 49)

Some groans ring out as Jones holds on to the ball for a touch to long but those fans swallow the noise as he does well to get through the white shirts. His touch through the legs of Kilman is perfect and it finds Jota. And from there, it is obvious that the Portuguese would not miss from close range.

Let’s get to some more emails before the rest of the games restart.

Kári is relishing the new Europa League format:

When I was a kid, the Cup Winner’s Cup was the best bet for exciting European upsets, and I hope the new Europa League, with no Champions League castoffs any more, will carry that tradition forward. That odds-on favourites Porto lost to a team from north of the Arctic Circle gives me hope that will be the case.

I agree! Think it is a chance for some sides to create some great European history for themselves.

Tim shows his old age (his words not mine!)

How long have Bolton’s shirt sponsors been around? Pretty sure they were responsible for my university digs back in 1982-83! It had nothing to do with the eight tenants and one bathroom, of course.

Would love to know how many people have seen Bolton’s shirts and gone: “That has convinced me. Victorian Plumbing it is.”

Billy wants to set the record straight:

Can we put paid the myth that Allardyce’s was Arsenal’s bogey opponent? He lost 20 times to Arsène Wenger!

All for the narrative, isn’t it?

GOAL! Arsenal 3-1 Bolton (Collins 53)

One minute you’re on the ropes and the next you’re scoring. From an Arsenal corner, Bolton break and Collins races through, easily having the legs on Jorginho. He takes his time to round Porter, and is able to make the space for himself to score into an open net.

I am very confused as to why Jorginho is the last man on a counter, but I digress. Bolton celebrate mildly and gesture to the away support to make their voices heard.

GOAL! Arsenal 3-0 Bolton (Nwaneri 49)

Moments after the start of the second half, Botlon play out from the back … and fail to bypass Arsenal’s press. So sloppy as Rice picks up the ball and lays it off to Nwaneri who is through on goal. It is not a great finish but the ball rolls under the keeper and into the net. The visitors played right into the hands of Arteta’s men there.

GOAL! Nice 1-1 Real Sociedad (Rosario 45)

A well-worked goal at the Allianz Riviera! Nice get some short passes through to the box despite the abundance of yellow shirts and Rosario quickly spots the opening and hits a low drive to equalise.

GOAL! Midtjylland 1-0 Hoffenheim (Osorio 42)

Fantastic finish! Andersson, near the halfway line, finds Osorio on the right. From about 30 yards out, the Chilean cuts back and rips one in at the far post.

GOAL! Ludogorets 0-1 Slavia Praha (Jurasek 37)

The visitors counter and the ball finds on the right. The angle is tight but he takes a spinning shot, with the ball hitting the roof of the net on it’s way in. Great finish!

GOAL! Dynamo Kyiv 0-3 Lazio (Dia 35)

Lazio running riot! Dele-Bashiru crosses it into the box and Dia, who is somehow left completely unmarked, heads the Italian side’s third.
