Best Christmas gifts for babies and new mums

Babies are the easiest to buy for – here’s some fabulous ideas to treat your new mum friends

So you’re looking for a present to buy a friend who has had a new baby? This list of baby items and gifts for new mums is all filler, no killer – tested or recommended by our mum network, there is not a thing here that we didn’t buy for ourselves, receive as a gift and love or is on our shopping list.

We wouldn’t recommend to you anything we wouldn’t spend money on ourselves.

The list is mainly items for the baby, but there are a few thrown in for mums as well – after all, it’s nice to remember the one who’s doing all the hard work.

Hear Me Roar leopard muslin squares, £19.95

Hear Me Roar leopard print muslin square set by Aden + Anais

You really do use muslins every day, so it’s nice to have smart ones that are pleasing on the eye for both mum and baby.

There is so much choice now – just think, muslins used to be boring old plain white.

Aden + Anais have so many to choose from. The leopard ones are obviously roarsome (sorry) but the metallic gold deco ones are equally gorgeous.

Mushi Stacking Cups, £14

Mushi stacking cups come in very pretty colours – a break from the primary coloured plastic that creeps in

Babies love playing with these as soon as they can hold things – as early as a couple months old. They love to watch you stack and knock them down, even before they can do it themselves and the cups are light so even a baby of a couple of months old can enjoy holding them and hearing them bang together. And such satisfying colours for parents!

Rainbow mobile, £24.95

Stylish and sweet rainbow mobile (Picture scandiborn.co.uk)

Handmade, subtle colours, sweet natural design. Very cute gift.

Leopard sweatshirt onesie, £9.99

Cosy, comfortable, convenient zip-up onesie in a lovely leopard print (Picture: H&M)

H&M is brilliant for baby clothes – and the designs are special enough to give as a gift.

We love the leopard print onesies and vests, but there’s also a cute velour (£12.99) or cable knit (£19.99) 2-piece for some up-to-the-minute baby loungewear, rib-knit dungarees (£14.99) and lovely leopard PJs.

Etta Loves zebra blanket, £48

This soft, fine-knit blanket is large enough to wrap around baby in sling or buggy but it also folds down nicely to go into a nappy bag. Plus it just looks so good too (Picture: Etta Loves)

Soft and warm but also a very fine knit, so it’s not too chunky to wrap around baby in the sling or to fold down small and put in your nappy bag.

Babies love the graphic, black and white print – designed to be appreciated by their eyes, which love bold prints and can’t see colour at first. I have a tonne of lovely blankets but this one fast became my favourite. It looks good too – feels like a fashion item rather than a function one, but it does both. The pretty pastel and dalmatian Terrazzo blanket for 5+ months is a dreamy gift for older babies.

Leopard teething comforter, £18.50

Leopard teething comforter £18.50 (Picture: Etta Loves)

A really sweet and stylish gift for new mums who are likely drowning in functional, fugly items, this lovely design is sassy enough to make them feel like they have a flash of their old selves back but is also super useful – a soft muslin attached to a smooth beech teething ring. Pops in your pocket too.

Artipoppe baby carrier, £315

Artipoppe Zeitgeist baby leopard classic carrier (Picture: Artipoppe)

The queen of baby carriers, it’s very comfortable for both mum and baby and looks so much more stylish than almost any other carrier on the market – so many of which feel like they suck all the style out of your look.

Has a supportive waist strap to protect your back and cross-over straps that don’t fall off your shoulders. Matches the Ergo for comfort. A generous, but we promise incredibly welcome, gift.

Animal nightlights, £35

Waking in the night is not scary at all if there is one of these cute friends gently glowing on the bedside (Picture: Liewood)

How sweet are these Liewood animal nightlights? I had the dino for my son years ago and he still has it on his shelf. Batteries last for eons too, which makes things easier.

Nightlights, around £35, Liewood.com

Animal Print Sensory Playmat, £75

Portable, comfortable and printed with very cool dalmatian on one side and a multi-colour print on the other. Also the perfect backdrop for photos (Picture: Etta Loves)

This soft, organic cotton, padded mat is designed specifically to support babies’ visual and cognitive development throughout their first year.

Use the dalmatian side when they are 0-4 months and see in black and white white then leopard print for 5+ months when their colour vision starts to develop.

Ewan The Dream Sheep Deluxe, £39.99

Ewan is a must-have for new mums – he cuts a cute figure, snuggled into cots, glowing warm red and shusshing gently

Owning a Ewan is like joining a club for new mums – ‘Have you got a Ewan? You need one!’ etc etc. He glows red and emits either a sssshhhing sound or whooshing noise to mimic the environment in the womb. Anecdotally, magically calms newborns to sleep.

New Moon 4-in-1 Pregnancy and Nursing pillow, £69

Bellamoon New Moon pregnancy and nursing pillow (Picture: Bellamoon)

This pillow will make it so much more comfortable to sleep during pregnancy, particularly in the case of hip or pelvis pain, or just to support boobs or belly – and will be invaluable for nursing.

It can also be shaped to support baby during tummy time or to sit up and looks much prettier than any other pregnancy pillow on the market.

Our pregnant friends say they would gladly chuck their husbands out of bed to replace them with their pillow, that’s how good they are. And Bellamoon pillows steal first place over most other when it comes to pretty design.

New Moon breastfeeding pillow, £69, Bellamoon

Voksi Baby Nest Premium, £99

The gift of sleep: This baby nest could help your new mum friend’s baby to sleep longer (Picture: Voksi)

The reason this is the best gift for new mums is because it gives the gift of sleep, and what new mother would turn that down?

The snug, egg-shaped nest offers a cosy and safe environment for babies. Anecdotally and from personal experience, babies love this and may well immediately sleep for longer once settled in.

The snug bed imitates the feeling of being warmly held, giving the baby a feeling of protection and warmth and, hopefully, a sense of calm.

Voksi Baby Nest Premium, £99, Voksi

Bear storage basket, £17.99

Ideal for storing toys or perhaps using at the changing table for nappies and wipes (Picture: H&M)

It’s not just cute clothes that H&M has plenty of – their homeware is lovely too, and they have a tonne of sweet items for babies’ rooms. This bear-faced seagrass basket is a fab gift, especially if you fill it with goodies for mum and baby. Larger version available too.

Bear storage basket, £17.99, H&M

NapNap smart mattress, £120

The NapNap sleep mat helps babies fall asleep quicker and can help them to stay asleep for longer – what mum doesn’t want that?

The gift of sleep mark II: NapNap is a smart mattress that helps baby to sleep quicker and stay asleep longer by gently vibrating and emitting white noise, recreating the safety of the womb. Recommended by paediatricians and used in neo-natal departments, it has 6 modes of vibration to ease troubled sleep routines and fits into cots, bassinets and prams. Also helps with colic and tummy time. One two-hour charge lasts up to 15 days. Mums can also use it to gentle vibrate away tired legs, bonus.

Organic cotton cellular blanket, £45

A cellular blanket is on every baby kit check list – and this soft, organic cotton blanket in grey ticks that box as well as the style box too

A cellular blanket is on every baby kit list. This one is soft cotton with a cellular weave that allows air to circulate, plus it looks good too (also comes in sweet pale shades of blue, green and pink). A company set up by a mum after she made her own blankets for her baby who was suffering with eczema, Blanket & Co specialise in gentle handmade organic blankets and swaddles for babies and small children, use only 100% organic cotton and bamboo and give £5 from every blanket sold to Evelina Children’s Hospital in London.

Nesting stacking blocks, £12.95

Colourful Creatures nesting blocks stack up high but fit neatly inside each other for storage (Picture: Rex London)

These make a great gift; I have personally gifted these to lots of pals. Most kids love to build and knock down towers and these blocks are just perfect for that. A lightweight, conveniently stored set of blocks with lovely bright pictures and numbers, they nest inside each other for simple storage. Especially good present if you have to pack for Christmas.

Stokke highchair, £178

The Stokke Tripp Trapp highchair will take you from birth to adulthood if you so wish – a stylish product that really does last a lifetime

We love the Stokke Tripp Trapp highchair as you can pull baby right up to the dining table so that they eat with the family at the table, rather than on their own tray set further back. The Scandinavian design is a classic too, with pretty colours and a choice of accessories. The chair is adjustable for all ages with newborn set (£79) that brings tiny babies right into the action, making a change from having them sitting on the floor.

Magnetic babygros, from £24.95

Magnet Mouse babygros do themselves up in an instant thanks to strong magnet fastenings that find each other as they come close. They are also cute, with Liberty print pockets and trim, and feel top quality (Picture Magnet Mouse)

These babygros are a brilliant investment and a unique gift. They are made of very soft, cosy cotton – but that’s not the best thing about them. The best bit is the magnetic fastening – NO POPPERS – that means anyone (even five-thumbed dads or night-time nappy changers) can do them up with ease – you literally just slip the babygro on and the magnets instantly close all the way up themselves. No more popping and unpopping confusing buttons and still ending up with a gap in the leg. Baby is wrapped up in seconds.

The babygros also come in sweet styles, classic colours – and some have little Liberty print floral pockets and matching collars. Beyond cute.

Rainbow abacus, £14.95

A classic design piece for the nursery, fun for little hands but educational too. Natural Baby Shower is another site with an excellent selection of beautifully designed baby gifts. We also love the rainbow stacker, £22,95, and the wooden race track, £24.95, among many others.

Organic bamboo muslin squares, £29.99

Blanket & Co organic bamboo muslin squares can be used as burp cloths, soft blankets, swaddles, towels, pram covers – you really will get your money’s worth out of this gift

It may sound silly, but having a few stylish muslins makes you feel more like yourself, especially as you’ll likely constantly have one in your pocket/bag/over your shoulder for the next few years. These sunny ones are very pretty.

Crab bubble machine, £10.50

Bring the magic of bubbles to your friend’s home

Even if your friend doesn’t want plastic in the house, they will warm to this. Babies love bubbles, and these machines bust out billions of bubbles at once, rather than a little stream once per breath. They use them in our baby sensory classes and the babies are transfixed. Can be used in the garden or for a fun-filled bathtime.

Crab bubble machine, £10.50, Hamleys

Stella McCartney jumper, £67

Mums might not splash out on this themselves, which is what makes this little Stella McCartney jumper a sweet gift for a new mum

Baby is never too young for Stella. We were given the sweetest little Stella McCartney swimsuit for our baby, which she grew out of in 5 seconds but gave us a lot of joy before she did.

Twinning PJs, from £18

Cheesy? Maybe. Cute? Yes (Picture: Polarn O.Pyret)

What’s the point of having children if you can’t embarrass them with family photos of you all dressed the same? Polarn O.Pyret’s trademark stripes and soft, good quality cotton come in sets of PJs for little and large. They are so sweet – and worth it for the Christmas Day photos alone. Available in grey, navy and red stripe.

Inka buggy organiser in camo, £48

One of the items our mums said they found most useful was the buggy organiser

These are so handy. Both the Tiba + Marl and the Storksak come with unanimously good reviews. Unisex, functional, this has lots of pockets for phone, coffee cup and keys on the outside, then inside plenty of room for nappies, wipes and a change of clothes. Means you don’t have to take the entire nappy bag out for every journey.

Inka buggy organiser, £48, tibaandmarl.com

Storksak stroller organiser, £39

Slips onto the buggy handles and holds enough to mean you don’t need to take a bag out with you every time

Another organiser we love – this looks very smart on the buggy and carries a few nappies, outfit change, muslin plus cup/bottle, phone and keys on the 4 outer pockets. So practical but also feels luxe.

Breastfeeding sweatshirt, £38

Breastfeeding sweatshirt with clever zip opening (Picture: Latched)

There’s a real dearth of stylish breastfeeding clothing available. Latched is a brand that offers clothing you’d actually wear day-to-day, breastfeeding or not. We love this two-tone sweatshirt with clever zip opening – no messing with awkward buttons, no lifting up your top to reveal your tummy to the world. The same brand also has a nice loose hoodie for lounging – and their sports bras (£35) are brilliant too.

Colourblock sweatshirt, £38, Latched.uk

Bravado Ballet Bra, £26

The ballet bra by Bravado is very soft, has the perfect stretch and is as essential during pregnancy as it is for breastfeeding (and beyond!). The most comfortable bra you’ll ever own and a very thoughtful gift

The Bravado ballet bra is THE most comfortable nursing bra on the market – but it also works during pregnancy, so buy it early and your mum friend will thank you. It’s more attractive than so many nursing bras and so soft – it was the only bra I could get anywhere near my boobs when they were ultra painful in the first few weeks after birth.

The Original Nursing Bra, £22.50, is fab too, and offers a little more support.

Ballet nursing bra, £26, uk.bravadodesigns.com

Breastfeeding sports bra, £35

Breastfeeding sports bra, £35, Latched

Sports bras that fit before pregnancy are likely too tight post-birth – not only have boobs usually grown a few sizes and can be quite tender, but the ribcage expands too, and takes a while to go back to normal.

Latched’s nursing sports bras are refreshingly stylish and allow you get back to some form of exercise without your bazookas bouncing all over and feed easily before and after (or during!). And actually, exercise or not, I found the added support of a sports bra to be useful on walks, too.

Breastfeeding sports bra, £35, Latched.uk

Amawrap sling, £49.99

The amawrap is ideal for when baby is newborn as it’s so soft and holds baby so close

When babies are small slings with buckles and belts can seem uncomfortable. The Amawrap stretch cotton sling is the exact opposite – so soft, comfortable and holds baby close to your body, as close as possible to the womb experience And it’s far easier to tie than it might first seem. We wore ours constantly in the first months. There are colours to match any wardrobe but this zebra print is jazzy for a gift. They also do really pretty reusable face cloths in floral fabrics that make a lovely gift as eco baby wipes. Call for details on the fabrics available.

Flower and food gifts, from £53

Pollenet will deliver your mum friend a beautiful hand-tied bouquet along with the best snacks – loads of which you can’t have when pregnant, so it’s even better. Such a thoughtful gift

Flowers make a lovely gift – but you now what makes a better one? Flowers + food. Easy food for your new mum friend to graze on when she’s only got one hand to work with.

Flower and food bundles, from £53, pollenetflowers.co.uk

Leopard leggings, £40

Leopard leggings for early pregnancy or post-natal, £40, Latched

I don’t think I am alone in saying I found it hard to find clothes that a) fit and b) didn’t make me feel like an overstuffed sausage after I’d given birth. Nothing fit and jeans were uncomfortable.

That’s where these leggings came in. Made with a thick fabric that has a firm hold, they smooth legs (no mean feat) while the high waistband avoids the sensitive c-section area and spares the dreaded muffin top. The leopard print adds edge to a post-natal look.

Leopard leggings, £40, Latched.uk

Chocolate coffee beans, £10

Espresso beans covered in chocolate make a sweet gift at a good price (Picture: Farhi.com)

One for sugar- and caffeine-hooked mums (that will be all of us, then). Brazilian coffee beans covered in dark chocolate are a sweet gift that will tick two boxes: The need for chocolate and the need for coffee. Not only do they taste and look good, they are a bargain at £10, too. The same brand makes choc brazils, almonds and more and has some pretty packaging options.

Breastfeeding necklace, £21.50

This feeding necklace in baby-safe stainless steel will help keep tiny hands occupied while feeding – and away from glasses, precious necklaces and hair

Tiny hands will grab at anything when they’re feeding – hair, delicate necklaces, glasses – this cleverly designed necklace gives them something safe to play with and as a bonus, helps prevent them getting distracted elsewhere while feeding.
