BARBIE manufacturer Mattel has launched a new range of “gender inclusive” dolls that are “free of labels”.
Giving kids the freedom to design their own characters, the “Creatable World” range includes a selection of clothing options, accessories and wigs so that children can have “limitless” options of how they wish to design their dolls.
Kids can switch long hair for short, swap skirts for trousers and add a range of gender-free accessories.
To create the inclusive collection, Mattel said it teamed up with “experts, parents, physicians and most importantly, kids” to create six different kits with “endless styling possibilities”.
“Toys are a reflection of culture and as the world continues to celebrate the positive impact of inclusivity, we felt it was time to create a doll line free of labels,” said Kim Culmone, senior vice president and global head of design for Mattel.
“Through research, we heard that kids don’t want their toys dictated by gender norms.
“This line allows all kids to express themselves freely which is why it resonates so strongly with them.
“We’re hopeful Creatable World will encourage people to think more broadly about how all kids can benefit from doll play.”
Each kit comes with a short-haired doll dressed in a vest and shorts, six items of clothing, three pairs of shoes, two additional accessories and a long-haired wig.
You can buy them online at shops including Amazon and Smyths (with Smyths also stocking in store) for £34.99.
