Netflix viewers have praised the under-the-radar 2004 film Cellular as one of the ‘best thrillers’.
Starring Kim Bassinger, Chris Evans, Jessica Alba, William H Macy and Jason Statham, Cellular is an action-thriller that was released 21 years ago.
The synopsis for the movie reads: ‘In this suspenseful action film, a young man becomes an unlikely hero after he receives a call for help from a stranger in captivity.’
Directed by David R. Ellis, the film initially received mixed reviews from fans as it proved to be a thrill ride for some and a snooze-fest for others.
However, after launching on the streaming platform, the movie has soared up the ranks and earned itself a place on the UK Netflix’s top 10 most-watched films.
The film is currently the seventh most watched film in the site, coming after the Shrek franchise, Amy Schumer’s movie Kinda Pregnant, Superpets and Back in Action.
Fans who have watched the film since launching on Netflix this year have given it high praise, explaining that it was a pleasant surprise.

A viewer named Will G on Rotten Tomatoes said: ‘So underrated, the plot is great and the action is plausible compared to something as ridiculous as ‘wanted’. Seen it several times. Good film, well paced and no saggy bits!’
That said, not everyone is impressed. ”I’m watching a film called Cellular (2004 with Kim Basinger, Jason Statham and Chris Evans). I’m twenty minutes in and this might be the worst acting I’ve ever seen in any film ever. Especially Basinger,’ said dirtyfrog on X.
The film has earned a 56% score on Rotten Tomatoes -managing to become somewhat of a marmite film with viewers.
The critics’ consensus reads: ‘Though it’s gimmicky and occasionally feels like a high-end cell phone ad, Cellular is also an energetic and twisty thriller.’
The film had a budget of $25 million (£20.1 million) but grossed $57 million (£46 million), making it quite the box office smash!
Cellular is available to stream now on Netflix.
