Guy Pearce may be currently dating someone, but he will always have a lot of love for his ex-wife.
The Australian actor, 57, opened up about his love life in a recent interview, admitting that despite being separated from his ex-wife, Australian psychologist Kate Mestitz, for a decade, he once considered her the ‘greatest’ love of his life.
The Brutalist star is currently dating Game of Thrones actress Carice van Houten, who he shares a young son with.
Discussing his past relationship, which lasted for 18 years before they separated in 2015, he told The Guardian: ‘My ex-wife, Kate [Mestitz], was the greatest love of my life.’
Despite the fond words, the Bafta-nominated star told the news outlet that Kate was also a part of what was the ‘greatest disappointment’ in his life.
Explaining that he was ‘devastated’ when their relationship began breaking down, he said he was hard on himself, feeling as though he ‘messed up’ his marriage.
Guy announced his separation from Kate in 2015 with a statement to The Sydney Morning Herald: ‘Kate and I will always love and support one another and be the best of friends,’ he said.
‘No one knows me like Kate does, and we’ll forever be appreciative of our mutual respect,’ he added. ‘We’ve both grown enormously through our relationship, but sadly, the time has come to part ways.’
Guy’s transparent comments about his ex-wife in the recent interview were followed by the star admitting he no longer considers her his ‘greatest love’ as that spot has been filled by someone else.
Talking about his family life now, which includes Carice, 48 and their son, who they welcomed in 2016, he added: ‘I’ve moved on from her now, and the greatest love of my life is my child, Monte.’
This isn’t the first time the Memory actor has spoken about fatherhood and how it has changed his life.
‘After Monte was born, someone said to me, “You realize you’re now living with your heart on the outside?” And it really is true, isn’t it?,’ he shared with The Independent in 2021.
He continued to say becoming a father also had an impact on his career.
‘When I started acting, I knew if I needed to cry that it could come out easily,’ he continued. ‘Then, after 15 years of therapy, I became a far calmer and more satisfied human being, but trying to cry in a scene became impossible. Since having my boy, though, I cry at the drop of a hat again.’
The couple welcomed their son when Guy was 53 years old. He previously told Who magazine: ‘Having a young child at the ripe old age of 53 is a lot, but I am focused on spending all the time I can with him and being the best dad I can be.’
Guy, his wife and their son are currently based in Amsterdam, where they live in a colourful home they previously opened up to Home Beautiful.
