Paul Scholes believes it would be “ridiculous” for Man Utd to sell Alejandro Garnacho and Kobbie Mainoo.
Both players came through the United ranks together, with Garnacho joining the club’s academy from Atletico Madrid in 2020.
They won the FA Youth Cup together in 2022 and have since become key players in the first team. However, both have been linked with departures amid a reported impasse in contract negotiations.
“I don’t like the fact that you develop a player, and a young player comes in and breaks into the team, and you’re selling him for profit that gets off the Profit and Sustainability [Rules],” Karen Carney told TNT Sports at Old Trafford.
“I hate that. And especially… I’m a bit of a purist. You’ve developed them through the academy, and everyone has worked really hard to get them there.
“So I think I hate it. I think it would be a really bad move. He’s [Mainoo’s] the key moving forward for Manchester United.
“And Scholesy, you just mentioned you’re from the Class of 92 – imagine selling you guys when you came through for that. It’d just be ludicrous.”
Scholes added: “Yeah, it’d be absolutely ridiculous. On Garnacho, he’s been Manchester United‘s [top goalscorer this season], as you say, all the hard work that the club have to do for him.”
