It’s a well-known fact that passengers do some odd things on planes, from yoga in the aisles to taking a pet peacock onboard – but one woman may just take the cake.
An Italian food blogger, Federica Rossi, hit nearly two million views on Instagram after she made a cheesecake from scratch on a Ryanair flight.
Sitting in her window seat, the food influencer put her tray table down and produced all the ingredients she needed and got to work constructing her culinary masterpiece.
Federica’s can be seen following this recipe:
- Crushing biscuits in a plastic bag with the side of a cake tin, then pour the crumbs into the base of the tin.
- Pour in some partly melted butter and honey before mixing together with the biscuits to make the cheesecake base.
- Open a tub of cream cheese, pour in a sachet of sugar and give it a good mix. Then, add it on top of the biscuit base in the tin.
- Smooth the top of the cake with the back of a spoon, then garnish it with two small pot of strawberry jam.
- Enjoy!
While some found the food influencer’s video a bit of fun, others called into question whether it was really hygienic to be making pudding on a plane.
‘Ah yes full of circulating germs stirred in,’ commented @mj_major_design.
@noamycoco added: ‘If you knew how dirty and nasty those planes are… you’d think twice before making a cake on those try tables.’
In bad news for Federica, a flight attendant previously told Metro that the dirtiest place on the entire plan is actually the tray tables, due to the fact they’re used for eating, entertainment, reading, resting objects and more.
‘Given their multifunctional use and the fact that cleaning crews often have limited time between flights, tray tables may not receive a thorough cleaning, leading to a significant buildup of bacteria and viruses. This makes them a prime location for the transmission of illnesses,’ said the cabin crew member.
Some of Federica’s followers also took issue with her lack of regard for those on the plane who may have allergies to the ingredients she used.
The Italian foodie did uphold some form of hygiene standards though, for herself and others.
She wrote under her post: ‘I cleaned before and especially after, it took me 15 minutes in silence, I didn’t leave even a crumb and I ate the cake with my two friends who were next to me.’
Others had no problem with the makeshift Ryanair dessert though, writing: ‘Finally, someone I would actually enjoy sitting beside,’ wrote one commenter. Another said: ‘Definitely better than the things they give you on a plane.’
Fancy making your own? The good news is Ryanair allows any food and cold soft drinks on board, as long as it fits in your hand luggage. You might want to check entry requirements for where you’re headed though, as you might not be able to take the goods off the plane.
