Kirstie Allsopp slams homework as a ‘waste of time’ and says not banning her kids from doing it is her ‘greatest regret’

KIRSTIE Allsopp has labelled homework a “waste of time” and claimed her “biggest regret” as a parent is not banning her children from doing it.

The Location, Location, Location presenter took to Twitter to respond to new figures which suggest that just over half of eight to 18-year-olds “read for pleasure”.

The new research – conducted by the Literacy Trust for World Book Day – revealed an overall decline in reading, with only 52.5 per cent of teens reading for fun in 2019 in comparison to 58.8 in 2016.

However, the 47-year-old mum-of-two – who admitted to smashing her children’s iPads after they broke her screen time rules – was not in the least surprised by the drop in numbers.

The presenter said: “Hardly surprising figures, the joint assault of absurd homework, which takes time from reading, and the smartphone and tablet, it’s amazing any kids are reading for pleasure.

“Reading is everything, homework other than reading is a waste of time and causes conflict and unhappiness in many families, mine included.”

The presenter has two sons, Bay, 12, and Oscar, 10, with her partner Ben Anderson.

She added: “My greatest regret as a parent is not taking a firm stance on homework from the very beginning and ensuring that our focus as a family was on reading, reading, reading.”

However, this ins’t the first time Kirstie has waged war on homework.

Back in 2017, Match of the Day host Gary Lineker called for a ban on “stressful” homework which he argued “drives a wedge” between kids and parents.

Calling for a “national boycott homework day” in response to Lineker’s comments, Kirstie described it as “an absurd hangover from another time.”

She added: “No evidence that under 10s gain from homework AND kids hate it, parents hate it & teachers hate it.”
