When you promise thousands of fans a ‘unique’ show, you need to deliver, or you might be called a tool, Tool.
The iconic 90s rock band, who rose to fame with tracks such as Sober and Prison Sex, have been criticised by fans who attended their first-ever Dominican Republic Tool in the Sand festival.
Taking to the social forum site Reddit, fans said they were hoping ‘to see an epic no-repeat set’; what they got in return were repeats and a lack of songs they love.
‘So I hate to be this guy. but what happened to two unique sets?’ @all_calm wrote. ‘Am I the only one who’s a bit turned off by this? I distinctly remember reading two unique sets for this weekend and we got 4 different songs for night two.’
The festival took place across two luxury resorts in Punta Cana and saw fans splash out thousands on tickets and accommodation.
In return, they were promised performances from several popular rock bands, including Primus and Coheed, as well as Tool on both nights one and two.
While the band—made up of Maynard James Keenan, Adam Jones, Danny Carey, and Justin Chancellor—did, in fact, perform both nights, copies of their set lists reveal they played very similar sets.
And things took a turn for the worse on the second night, as they cut their performance short, playing just nine songs.
It resulted in some fans booing in the crowd and even more voicing their disappointment on Reddit, as they claim to have also read advertising stating the sets would be different.
Metro has been unable to find the exact posts indicating that they may have been changed or removed.
‘You’re not alone. I’m a pretty optimistic person and always try to look on the bright side, but man I feel let down tonight,’ @phuuuuuuuuuuuuuck replied in one thread slamming the performance.
‘Furious. I budgeted for this, saved for this.’ @3serious said. ‘This is the most disappointed I’ve ever been with this band, including 13 years without an album. I want to sell my sessanta tix.’

On another Reddit thread, @wenk called the performance ‘inexcusable’.
‘This is really bad. I’m a huge TOOL fan and have seen them 16 times, but this is inexcusable. I hope they make this right. They advertised unique setlists and played the same s**t they’ve been playing for 6 years now and had 4 duplicate songs between the 2 nights,’ they wrote.
A video from the crowd posted to the social media site showed fans booing and angrily shouting at the band, while on Instagram, the upset continued with @John_De_Leon calling it ‘Scam in the Sand’.
While @socialtrees wrote: ‘That set list in DR was LAME…you guys disrespected your hardcore fans. They deserve a partial refund. SHAME ON TOOL!!!’
Tool, who are yet to respond to the backlash, have their next show in just three days’ time, in Monterrey, Mexico, on March 13.
